Teaching: Self-Awareness
Self-Awareness
Why This Skill Matters
Self-awareness is a foundational resilience skill because students cannot change what they do not recognize. When students lack self-awareness, they may repeat patterns, misinterpret feedback, or feel confused by their own reactions. Developing self-awareness helps students identify emotions, thoughts, strengths, and triggers so they can respond more intentionally. This skill supports growth, accountability, and emotional regulation, all of which are critical for long-term resilience.
Student Challenges This Skill Helps Address
- Repeated negative behavior patterns
- Emotional reactivity without understanding why
- Difficulty reflecting on choices
- Low insight into strengths and triggers
How WhyTry Builds This Skill
WhyTry builds self-awareness primarily through Emotional Regulation, where students learn to recognize emotions and identify triggers. Positive Self-Image reinforces awareness by helping students understand how beliefs and labels influence behavior. Decision-Making & Consequences further supports self-awareness by guiding reflection on how thoughts and emotions influence choices and outcomes.

Emotional Regulation
(“Defense Mechanisms”)
In Emotional Regulation, self-awareness is built by helping students recognize emotions, triggers, and internal reactions before behavior occurs. Facilitators guide students to notice patterns—what they feel, when reactions show up, and how emotions influence choices. Processing emphasizes that awareness is the first step to change, making self-awareness foundational to resilience and self-management.

Positive Self-Image
(“Labels”)
Positive Self-Image strengthens self-awareness by helping students reflect on how beliefs, labels, and self-talk shape behavior. Facilitators guide students to examine how they see themselves and how that perception influences effort, confidence, and choices. This processing helps students develop insight without shame, which supports growth and resilience.

Decision-Making & Consequences
(“Reality Ride”)
In Decision-Making & Consequences, self-awareness is reinforced as students reflect on how thoughts and emotions affect choices. Facilitators help students identify decision patterns and emotional triggers that influence outcomes, strengthening intentional decision-making.
