Teaching: Perseverance
Perseverance
Why This Skill Matters
Perseverance is a defining element of resilience because it allows students to continue moving forward despite setbacks, frustration, or slow progress. Many students give up not because they lack ability, but because they have not yet learned how to persist through discomfort or difficulty. Teaching perseverance helps students understand that struggle is a normal part of growth and that sustained effort leads to confidence, skill development, and long-term success.
Student Challenges This Skill Helps Address
- Giving up easily
- Avoidance of challenging tasks
- Frustration when progress is slow
- Low task completion
How WhyTry Builds This Skill
WhyTry builds perseverance through Hard Work & Determination, where students learn how desire, time, and effort work together to produce results. This is reinforced in Problem Solving, which teaches students how to push through obstacles rather than stop when challenges arise. Motivation & Resilient Mindset supports perseverance by helping students stay engaged and hopeful during setbacks. Facilitators guide students to reflect on past perseverance and apply those lessons to new challenges.
